I didn’t start paper folding until later in life when I became a stay-at-home-Mother to my two children, Max and Sophie. After I purchased my first Origami bird-making kit, I couldn’t stop folding paper and within the next year I started my own After School Enrichment Program, Origami Mami which is still going strong today. I teach Origami at 9 local Elementary Schools in the East Bay and design most of my own models for each of the weekly projects. In addition, I am a self-published illustrator of my own Coloring Book, “Botanimals-A Coloring Book of Flora and Fauna and enjoy painting and being close to nature.

Jeff has been practicing origami for over 25 years. His love of animals as a kid inspired him to learn origami so he could fold his own paper zoo. He bought a number of origami books and folded during long family trips and in his spare time, mostly folding animals and traditional models. He began working with Taro’s Origami Studio in 2014 and has loved being part of Taro’s staff and community of folders. He has taught students of all ages and skill levels, and folded models for corporate commissions and live events.

In addition to being an origami teacher, Jeff is a theater artist with extensive performing, directing and teaching credits. He enjoys crafting his origami with the same eye for dynamic contour and character that he brings to his theatre work, and believes in empowering the inner artist through creative education. He is a graduate of George Washington University, New York University and the Dell’Arte School of Physical Theatre.

Joe Adia is a self-taught artist who has been practicing origami for over 15 years. He started folding at age 12, with the traditional crane as his first model. Since then he has collected books, practiced folding daily, and designed his own models. Joe made origami a part time living by selling his models, teaching for schools and charitable programs, exhibiting at events, and now folding for Taro’s Origami Studio. In addition, Joe has a master’s in Speech Language Pathology. He hopes to one day diagram his designs, publish them, and even create video tutorials.

Taro Yaguchi’s love for paper developed as a child growing up in Japan. His grandfather was involved with the business of washi, traditional Japanese paper. How a plant could be transformed into a shiny, thin yet strong fiber always captivated Taro. His respect for paper, plants, and nature grew, which in turn grew into his love for folding origami.

Instead of following his grandfather’s footsteps in his career, Taro pursued his study at Tokyo University of Science with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He currently runs a multinational patent law firm with offices in the U.S. and Japan. It seemed that his path was drifting away from paper. However, his interest in origami was sparked again in 2001 when he decided to exhibit at an inventor’s convention. He needed an eye-catching novelty gift for his booth. He came up with a simple paper airplane design with his firm’s information on one side and an aircraft design on the other.

The idea was a hit, and soon people were stopping by his booth and grabbing three to four sheets of origami at a time. Word spread, and staff at the conference were also stopping by to ask for his design. That was when Taro realized he may have hit on something exciting. If a simple paper airplane can generate so much interest, why not recreate his original airplane with more realism and details? His childhood memory of origami folding and the smell of his grandfather’s washi factory came back. He started experimenting with different folding techniques and designs.

The monthly flights Taro made between the U.S. and Japan as he served clients in the patent industry became his time for meditative origami artistry. “How can I share the joy of origami culture with millions of people around the globe? How can I make it more accessible to everyone?” Soon, he came up with the idea of uniquely pre-printed sheets of graphic origami. He initially created and copyrighted graphic origami forms for commercial aircraft, trucks, cars and other modes of transportation.

Since then, Taro was able to publish his origami books and collaborate with corporations such as TOYOTA in origami artwork. Due to the demand for workshops and origami parties, Taro opened his first studio in Park Slope, Brooklyn, NY, and has further expanded to Oakland, CA.

Ever since his grandfather folded a frog from a dollar bill, Frank Ling has had a fascination with the art of paper folding. Largely self-taught, Frank started folding at the age of five. In 2012, he began working as an instructor at Taro’s Origami Studio in Park Slope. In the studio he spends his time teaching students, leading workshops and field trips, and has been involved with numerous commissions and corporate projects. Outside of Taro’s, Frank has done consulting work for The Mill and collaborated with local Brooklyn artist Erika Barratt. He has also folded many, many models for his friends and family.

Frank enjoys all disciplines of the art and tackles new models as quickly as he finds them. For a challenge, he prefers the work of Satoshi Kamiya and Jason Ku. To pass the time, he also likes folding modular polyhedra or tessellations. Put any diagram in front of him, and Frank is sure to figure it out.
